LIE #16: Mitt Romney Doesn’t Understand Russia

LIE: President Obama Attacked Mitt Romney For Failing To Understand The Threat Posed By Russia.

THE REALITY: Russia Has Been A “Geopolitical Adversary” And Was Harshly Criticized By President Obama And His Advisers

Mitt Romney Has Recognized Russia As A “Geopolitical Adversary”:

Mitt Romney: “In Terms Of Geopolitics, I’m Talking About Votes At The United Nations And Actions Of A Geopolitical Nature Russia Is The Number One Adversary In That Regard.” WOLF BLITZER: “The last time you and I spoke in an interview, you told me that Russia was America’s number one geostrategic foe. Do you still believe that?” ROMNEY: “There’s no question but that in terms of geopolitics, I’m talking about votes at the United Nations and actions of a geopolitical nature Russia is the number one adversary in that regard. That doesn’t make them an enemy. It doesn’t make them a combatant.” (CNN’s “The Situation Room,” 7/30/12)

Romney: “Russia Is A Geopolitical Adversary But It’s Not An Enemy With You Know, Missiles Being Fired At One Another Or Things Of That Nature.” ROMNEY: “They don’t represent the number one national security threat. The number one national security threat, of course, to our nation is a nuclear Iran. Time continues to pass. They continue to move towards nuclearization. This is more and more disconcerting and dangerous to the world. But Russia, particularly look at a place like Syria. Russia has supported the Assad regime even as it has been attacking its own people. Russia likewise has been slow to move to the kinds of sanctions that have been called for in Iran. Russia is a geopolitical adversary but it’s not an enemy with you know, missiles being fired at one another or things of that nature.” BLITZER:”I’m glad you clarified that.” (CNN’s “The Situation Room,” 7/30/12)

And The Obama Administration Has A History Of Calling Russia “Evil” And Being One Of The Nation’s Major Political Foes:

In A 2008 Presidential Debate, Barack Obama Said That Russia “Engaged In An Evil Behavior” Under Putin’s Leadership. NBC’S TOM BROKAW: “This requires only a yes or a no. Ronald Reagan famously said that the Soviet Union was the evil empire. Do you think that Russia under Vladimir Putin is an evil empire?” OBAMA: “I think they’ve engaged in an evil behavior and I think that it is important that we understand they’re not the old Soviet Union but they still have nationalist impulses that I think are very dangerous.” (Senator Barack Obama, 2008 Presidential Debate, Nashville, TN, 10/7/08)

During A 2007 Presidential Debate, Joe Biden Called Putin One Of The Three Biggest Threats To The United States. MSNBC’S BRIAN WILLIAMS: “Senator Biden, from the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, what three nations other than Iraq represent to you the biggest threat to the United States?” BIDEN: “The biggest threat to the United States is right now North Korea; Iran, not as big a threat, but a long-term threat; and quite frankly, the tendency of Putin to move in a totalitarian direction, which would unhinge all that’s going on positively in Europe.” (Senator Joe Biden, MSNBC 2008 Democratic Primary Presidential Debate, Orangeburg, SC, 4/26/07)

In March 2012, U.S. Ambassador To Russia Michael McFaul “Said It Felt Like He Was Back In The Cold War.” “In February, McFaul said it felt like he was back in the Cold War when he moved into Spaso House, the Moscow residence of American ambassadors since 1933. ‘It has been surprising that there was so much anti-Americanism, because we thought we were building a different kind of relationship, and it makes some people nervous that it could so quickly and reflexively go back to - in terms of rhetoric - an era that we thought was behind us,’ said McFaul.” (James Brooke, “US Envoy Sees Closer Moscow Ties After Putin’s Election,” Voice Of America, 3/23/12)
