Back To The ‘90s: Clinton’s Keep Your Plan Promise

Today, The Wall Street Journal’s Rebecca Balhaus tweeted a note from a 1994 Clinton administration meeting that stated if you could keep your health plan if your liked it under HillaryCare.

This isn’t the first time that the Clinton administration had made keeping your doctor and your health plan a core selling point of HillaryCare. In Bill Clinton’s draft remarks to a Joint Session of Congress, Americans could keep what they liked under HillaryCare.

Months after President Clinton’s Address to a Joint Session of Congress, a memo circulated by Clinton aides showed that they were worried about over-promising that people would be able to choose their doctors and health plans since “we know full well we won’t deliver.”

In 2007, then-candidate Hillary Clinton was the first to say that “You can keep the doctors you know and trust. You keep the insurance you have if you like it.”

The past is prologue as Clinton should have taken the advice of Bill Clinton’s advisors before promising once again that Americans could keep their doctor and their plan during her rollout of HillaryCare 2.0  Obama made the same promise and earned 2013’s “Lie of the Year” from PolitiFact. Obama’s lie also received 4 Pinocchio’s from The Washington Post’s The Fact Checker, which is reserved for the most egregious lies.

Call it awkward, following Obama’s broken plan promise, Bill Clinton chided Obama and called for him to honor his promise he had repeatedly made to Americans.
